Canadice Lake trails, South

Roger Smith, Linda and Steve Benedict, Lori and Steve Van Kirk and Holly Noble rendezvoused on Canadice Lake Road at the blue posts marking the southern trailhead. Rain during the night had beaten down the tall grasses and nearly obscured the path. However, lured by the sound of warblers, the group trudged forward in single file. (The advantage went to the lucky birder who brought up the rear.) We were soon soaked from the waist down but busy with our binoculars. Chestnut-sided, Hooded, Common Yellowthroat and Blue-winged Warblers were active and, despite overcast skies and heavy foliage, occasionally perched in full view. The habitat was diverse (ponds, streams, swamp, marsh, lake, deciduous and evergreen trees, abundant shrubbery) and supported a variety of species. When we emerged at the more well-defined section of the trail at Canadice Lake, walking was easier. The highlight was a Virginia Rail that scurried directly across the trail for all to see. From there, we completed the loop at the northern trailhead and a short walk to our parked cars on Canadice Lake Road. Thank you to Lyn Jacobs for listing the species!
