Seneca Lake State Park area 10/24/2026

Friends,
We met at the Finger Lakes Welcome Center at 8:30 AM. It was sunny but in the 30's with a rather stiff south wind. It was brisk but old Sol in a cloudless blue sky made the brisk morning bearable if not pleasant. The group consisted of a first-time visitor and member Karen. Regulars included: Rich, Lyn, Allyn, Leslie, Carol, Steve & Lori, Steve & Linda and yours's truly. We made 5 stops with a separate ebird list for each. We spent 30 minutes at the Welcome Center walking .16 miles. We observed.
7 Mallard
Ring-billed Gulls (in numbers too big to calculate)
4 American Herring Gull
3 Great Black-backed Gull
1 Belted Kingfisher
At the Seneca Yacht Club, we spent 23 minutes and walked .8 miles to observe.
24 Canada Geese both in the air and in the water
19 Mallard
3 Green-winged Teal
2 Redhead
250 Ring-billed Gull
26 Double-crested Cormorant
13 European Starlings
1 Eastern Blue Bird
5 Red-winged Blackbird
We moved down the Park Road to the Spray Park Beach. Some scofflaws among us parked illegally catching the attention of a park monitor who promptly, firmly, but kindly informed us that the area was clearly marked with the universal "NO PARKING" symbol and that the Park Police were on the beat. Best to move on...
Before leaving we saw.
4 Canada Goose
43 Mallard
1 Killdeer
We traveled to the next parking are west of the Spray Park where we spent about 15 minutes and saw
21 Mallard
42 Ring-billed Gull
4 Greater Black-backed Gull
2 Double-crested Cormorant
We then went to the pond area near the west parking. We spent 43 minutes and walked .18 mile of trails around the pond.
We flushed 35 Mallard off the pond and saw
1 Red-bellied Woodpecker
2 Downey Woodpecker
3 Blue Jay
5 Black-capped Chickadee
1 White-breasted Nuthatch
20 European Starling
1 White-throated Sparrow
1 Northern Cardinal
at least 10 American Robin
All in all, not the wildest day of birding we have experienced. I could tell that everyone was having fun. We always do.
Yours Truly,
Kevin
