We met at 8 AM at Muller Field Station, the FLCC-owned and managed property at 6455 County Road 36, Honeoye. This was not an official EBS field trip; society members were invited by the FLCC staff to join one of the Friday Wandering and Wondering sessions which the Field Station sponsors at Muller. These sessions are held weekly, usually starting at 9, and open to the public. We started early, to catch more birds, and some arrived for an hour or more of birding before the group walk started. Each session includes a walk along the same path, following a trail along the Honeoye Inlet and then circling back through woods and grasslands. Each week's walk focuses on a different aspect of nature, led by a person with expertise. Total distance is about 3/4 mile. Doug Daniels served as the group leader. We walked as a group for about 2 hours. We were warned about poison ivy and ticks and were prepared for spring conditions; the trails were soggy in places, but the tiny leaves on the trees and shrubs allowed for great views of many birds.
Please note that the Muller Field Station is not open to the public for unscheduled visits. They run educational programs including research, field trips and paddles for student and community groups by appointment only. They will be closed through summer 2025 for property improvements. EBS attendees were: Steve and Linda Benedict, Steve and Lori Van Kirk, Doug Daniels, Holly Noble, Paul English, Nancy Jamison, Annie Schliffer, Dave Robertson, Inga Robinson, Wendy Stevenson, Jon and Sarah Gross, Saralinda Hooker. Other attendees were Maura Sullivan and Cody Wilkes from FLCC, and other regular attendees from the Wandering and Wondering series - a total of about 25.
Since the group was so large, we were spread out along the trail and everyone's experience was a little different. The highlight of the morning was a Blue-winged Warbler Hybrid, seen prior to the official start of the walk by Doug, Nancy and Paul, who got some excellent photos. The list of 35 species below is a composite of the lists of birds heard or observed by Doug Daniels and Steve Benedict, plus others that were reported to me. I have not included any numbers of observations, since I couldn't keep track. If you would like for me to share this as an E-Bird list, please send me your email address at shooker7373@gmail.com.
